Obra Social "La Caixa" presented last week its initiative LABO CosmoCaixa in the Canary Islands. It is a new interactive educational project offering experimental workshops with the aim of bringing science to young people and awakening in them the interest for research as well as fostering teamwork among them. A training laboratory created from biomedical research protocols published on Xplore Health

Apart from this itinerant laboratory in the Canary Islands, CaixaForum and Cosmocaixa in Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona have been offering for the last year Xplore Health experiments in their laboratories - also called Labo CosmoCaixa. Two more institutions are also implementing Xplore Health experiments: Domus Museum, in La Coruña, which in late 2012 inaugurated a new educational laboratory to conduct experiments from our website, and the Barcelona Science Park. These two institutions accommodate each year more than 2,000 students in their educational laboratories.

The laboratory of Obra Social "la Caixa", in the Canary Islands - aimed at students in their third and fourth years of secondary education - will give students the possibility of putting themselves in the role of a scientist during one day. It will  deal with the "Drug Synthesis" topic.  Students will have the opportunity to experiment how a drug is developed by carrying out a real research experiment related to the treatment of Parkinson's disease - which is currently being carried out by the Barcelona Science Park

The initiative will start at the educational centres in Tenerife and will last until the end of the current academic year. This same workshop will tour the educational centres in Gran Canaria island during the first semester of the academic year 2013/2014, and will after open up its itinerary towards Spain. It should be noted that these activities have already been carried out at the secondary schools of  IES Andres Bello in Santa Cruz, and the IES Profesor Martin Miranda in La Laguna.
