The new model of responsible research and innovation (RRI) invites professionals working in formal, non-formal and informal education to collaborate with other social actors —researchers, industry, politicians and civil society— in order to allow the citizens of today and tomorrow to take part in a meaningful way in R+D+i processes and in research-based decision-making processes.

At the same time, one of the goals is to increase their interest in education and in science and technology-based degrees (STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Under the umbrella of RRI, science-based education is considered a key aspect, together with five other political agendas: ethics; open access; gender equality; public participation; and governance. This holistic approach has led to a new trans-disciplinary education model that brings current research to the classroom and contextualises it with social and real-life challenges.

Within this context, Xplore Health provides:

Educational resources

to allow students to use science-based curricular content in a contextualised manner with current research projects related to everyday challenges.

Complementary resources

to allow students to discuss, anticipate and reflect on the different ethical, legal and social aspects related to the different topics, in order to foster learning with an inter-disciplinary approach.

in science teaching through classroom research, problem-based learning, group dynamics and educational assessment.

with different social actors, making it possible to demonstrate how science contributes solutions to social challenges (science for and with society).

This approach encourages students to deploy a series of basic skills that will allow them to become responsible and participative citizens in a knowledge-based society.

The interaction with different social actors is promoted in two different spheres:

In classroom activities

where students are encouraged to communicate with different social actors and act to help improve the relationship between science and the society. In this type of interaction, for example, they are encouraged to interview researchers and entrepreneurs and to report the results of their projects to researchers, journalists, politicians and the public.
