The Centre for Life’s first Xplore health event was held on 28th September 2011.
The subject of our first event was Biotechnology and a total of 23 students from 5 schools attended the event.
The students took part in a practical experiment where they inserted a plasmid into E.coli bacteria, which resulted in blue bacterial colonies and carried out a paper exercise that simulated cloning genes into the multiple cloning site of a plasmid. Students also took part a dialogue activity where they discussed the ethical implications of biotechnology. We were joined by several researchers who were able to explain how the techniques the students carried out in their practical session are used in real, medical research.
